And because we be pirates, we have our first pirate-y practice coming up this Friday at 1:00pm in SG 214.

Comfortable athletic shoes
Comfortable athletic attire
Your fencing equipment
That anti-sensorship attitude that makes you a pirate. Yeah, I know you stoled [sic] that mp3 file. And that fencing gear is probably some knock off brand you bought online from China.

So come one, come all! And bring that pirated version of Princess Bride you got off that illegal site before it get’s blacklisted!

In all seriousness, there is a meeting this Friday from 1-4pm in SG 214. And before hopping on the bandwagon, do take the time to read at least the summaries of the bills H.R.3261 and S.968 . Quite honestly I think we’re all screwed unless people actually contact their Senators and Representatives. The idea behind the bill was good, in my opinion, but the execution is going to be messy…

Fall End of Semester Tournament!

Thank you to all of you who showed up to our last club meeting of the semester, as well as to those of you who participated in the tournament.

The results are as follows:

1st place: Simo

2nd place: Sal

3rd place tie: Monica& Steven (hey, you should have been in the picture).

Honorable mentions that we didn’t have time to do fence offs for:
“Inigo Montoya” (who did pretty well for an epeeist), Luis, Taylor, Trevor (who did pretty well for a saberest[sp?]), David and Leon.

It was our first all-electric tournament here at SCC, and that was quite exciting. And because we did lose a blade or two this year, this is the part of the blog where I HIGHLY recommend members to invest in their own equipment. Look! Here’s a link to get you started. If you’re tired of using the club equipment that gets washed once a semester at best, if you’re serious about this sport, buying your own stuff is a pretty good idea. It’s almost Christmas. And who wouldn’t want a shiny new sword underneath their Christmas tree?

The room request form for next semester is already in, so hopefully at the beginning of next year we will be able to get an early start! We will be holding elections next semester as well, so be prepared! We will be needing a VP for sure. Also, if you’re not already plugged in to the Google Group, please do so. There’s a link at the bottom of the page.

Ahoy there, Fencers!

As this week will be our last official meeting of the semester, we will be holding our semi-annual END OF SEMESTER TOURNAMENT! So, here’s what you need to know:

Time & Place: 1:00pm @ SG 214 (the usual meeting time)
Cost: $1 entry fee
Wear: Athletic clothing and shoes.
Remember: You’re fighting for the title of NO. 1 FOILIST IN THE CLUB! So give it your all! Husham H. was last years victor. Will he return again to reclaim his title? We shall see…

Also, as a reminder, winter break is no time to slack off. Once again I will mention Imani Fencing at the Oak Park community center. I myself will strive to attend Tuesday practices once again. Other than that, I hope to see you Friday (~~tomorrow~~ I guess that’s actually today. oops…). Ciao!

Sacramento City College observes Friday, November 11th as the Veteran’s Day holiday. Therefore there will be no fencing club meeting this Friday.

Alternatively, I’d like to once again point club members to Imani Fencing. Unfortunately I am unable to attend any of their practices, but I strongly encourage the rest of you to drop in – regularly would be good – either for your own benefit or just because you like kids. :]

UCSC 2011 William Nakfoor Memorial Tournament – The Results

Wow, UCSC is on top of it this year, the results are already out on AskFRED.net. But here are the brief results:

Mixed Foil:
L. Yi placed 20th overall, holding her own very well even after a long break from fencing.
M. Ng placed 26th overall, showing some improvement since UCD’s tournament in the spring.

Mixed Epee:
S. Crane placed 2nd overall in a very close match for the gold medal.

Mixed Saber:
T. Jones placed 22nd overall, doing much better than he thought he would after a 3 year break from fencing.

While there were technical problems, the tournament started about an hour late, and then the entire tournament slowed down when almost all the refs left – in the end Santa Cruz pulled through and we made it through the tournament without any heads rolling. It’s also worth mentioning that we got our 2 medals due to us from 2 years ago as well. We’re quite happy with that.

Thank you Santa Cruz for hosting this weekend’s tournament. It was a lot of fun. :]

There will be a regular Fencing Club meeting this Friday, October 28th from 1-4pm in SG 214 as per usual. Those of us who went to the tournament are now all fired up for the rest of the semester, so slacking will not be allowed. Gear up and fence!

UC Santa Cruz Tournament

Greetings Fencers!

On Saturday, October 22nd, UC Santa Cruz will be hosting a tournament at their campus. The details can be found in the link below. If you are interested and would wish to register, also follow the link as it will take you to the ASKFRED page where you can pre-register for the event. The cost will be $15 per event if you pre-register and $20 at the door. (http://askfred.net/Events/moreInfo.php?tournament_id=13634)

In preparation for this grand event, we will also be holding a mock tournament Friday, October 14th in our usual meeting place, South Gym 214. We will start the tournament promptly at 1:30pm and all club members will fight for their unofficial ranking within the club. There is no cost to participate in this tournament save for blood, sweat and determination. No tears please. All weapons will be competing.

Summer Challenge!

Hello Fencing Fiends!

As you all should know, we can’t exactly meet as an official club during the summer. But since when was fencing just a spring and fall sport? It should be year round! No, I am not exactly here to say that I have committed to a regular fencing schedule for the club yet, but until I find the time to make one and actually do that, I am here to encourage you to continue being engaged in the fencing community and also to stay in fencing shape.

S. Crane is participating in some major tournament or another in Reno, and if we can manage to extract the details from him going out to support our Epee captain as well as observe the other fencers would be a great club excursion.
The Imani Fencing Club at the Oak Park Community Center on Martin Luther King, Jr Blvd. (basically down the street from SCC) allows us to use their facilities and equipment as well as join them for their workouts during their meeting times. I tried calling to verify their hours, but I have no idea when they meet. Once that is figured out, that’s probably where the club will be meeting at least once a week.
May or may not take an excursion down to UC Davis and join one of their fencing work outs. Will hopefully try to go down there at least once this summer. Stay tuned for details.
Footwork and point control drills – These are doable at home. You have no excuse not to practice.
Stay in shape in general. Go for a jog, jump rope, do some free weights, squats, planks, stretch – Just block out a half an hour at least every day to do something. Staying in shape is not important only for fencing, but is also part of a healthy and balanced lifestyle (along with cereal and orange juice ).

Anyway, main point is to keep fencing in mind this summer as you chill, go in for summer school, work, do whatever it is that you do so that we won’t have to do a total refresher course at the beginning of next fall at our first club meeting.

Tournament Update

Prompt as ever, UC Davis already has the official tournament results up, which can be viewed here. As for SCC, it wasn’t a bad tournament.

K. Luster took 1st place in Mixed Novice Foil. Not bad for his first tournament. And as though to add some pizzaz to the tournament, both he and his opponent, R. McCullough ended their bout in a short dance off. S. Crane finished 2nd in a close bout against S. Kawula from UCDFC. And although they were both knocked out in the first round of direct eliminations, Novice foilist M. Magdaleno did very well for her first tournament, and M. Ng showed some improvement in her advancement to advanced foil. Neither of them finished in last place (aw yeah).

The SCC team that was planning to compete in the team competition on Sunday had a miscommunication error and ended up not competing. So no results there.

As for future club meetings, please remember that
there are no more club meetings this semester

Weekly Update #62

On Friday, April 29th, the SCC Fencing Club’s “End of the Year Tournament that Needs a Better Name!” tournament was held. It was a little crazy that Friday, so I’ll spare you the boring details and just give you the major results:

Top 3 Foil finishers were as follows:

Monica

Kris received the awesome traveling fencer bobble head trophy as his prize (one which he will have to return and defend next semester). All participating fencers fought well, and the tournament was good practice for those who were going to participate in the Davis tournament the following day.

Top 3 Epee finishers were as follows:

Stephen
Jonathan
Norman

Stephen received kudos and brownie points for once again dominating all the other epee members in the club. Jonathan was able to mar his otherwise 5-o sweep by landing a few touches on him. Once again, good practice for all.

The Davis Tournament is this weekend – Saturday, April 30th and Sunday, May 1st – and as soon as the team events are over I will report the results of the Tournament overall. Stay tuned, as you won’t be disappointed with the results.

Also, the 29th marked the last meeting of the semester. There will be no more official club meetings this semester. There is no meeting this upcoming Friday. Or the Friday after that. But, continue to still check the fencing page over the summer as hopefully we’ll be able to organize some summer training.

Practices are getting crowded.

On Friday, April 8th – not to be redundant or anything but – we, the fencing club, once again engaged in fencing.

In our meeting we also discussed the upcoming Davis tournament being held on Saturday, April 30th for individual events and Sunday, May 1st for team events. If you are interested in participating you may register at http://askfred.net/Events/moreInfo.php?tournament_id=14895 . It will be held at UC Davis and, depending on your event, starts at 9:00am.

Also, as the semester is soon coming to a close, SCC Fencing would like to announce our “End of the Semester Tournament that Needs a Better Name!” It will be held on Friday, April 29th (yes, right before the Davis Tournament) in SG 214. It will start promptly at 1:00pm and the entry fee will be $1.

Weekly Update #60

Whoa! Sixty weeks of updates! You may have noticed that they’re not all “weekly” per se, but at least you know what’s been going on from week to week, right?

Friday, April 1 was zombie apocalypse training. As fencers, our survival rate should be pretty high considering our weapons of choice. Therefore, the day consisted of extreme cardio activities and role playing fighting the semi-dead. It was great fun mixed with a touch of seriousness – would our superior weapon skills really save us during a zombie apocalypse? (Just kidding)

On a more serious note training consisted of casual duel challenges along with some structured lesson time to refine skills. The meeting ended early, but all in all was a rather productive meeting. Oh, and the highlight of the day was the fact that we now have at least a rough draft of our new and improved constitution/code of operations. Thank you S. Crane for putting in the time and effort to do that!

This week there is a meeting as usual, but we will NOT be meeting (officially) over Spring Break. The Davis Tournament has officially been set for Saturday and Sunday April 30 and May 1 with details to follow in the next few days. As Davis will be the last NCIFL tournament of the semester, and also because it is so close, it is highly recommended that you attend and participate.

Weekly Update #59

On Friday, March 25, we learned that the fencing class at SCC does indeed have members. At least two.

Again, this meeting was open fencing. People did come fencing and about 50% won and 50% lost.

As promised, we did hold elections for the office of Presidency. It was a close run off between Norman Wong and Monica Ng. After two very compelling speeches, Monica was voted to be President, and Norman took her position as Vice President. I’d say “Congratulations!” but I’m not really sure either of the two actually wanted the positions.

Our next meeting will be Friday, April 1st at 1:00pm (SHARP!). Be there! Or… ELSE.

Friday, March 18th was a lovely open fencing meeting. People walked up to each other, slapped each other with gloves and immediately proceeded to duel to the death.

Nah, not really, but it was a fun day full of free fencing and some 1 on 1 instruction for some fencers with Coach Brian.

ANNOUNCEMENT:

As H. Haroun has officially resigned as President, we will be holding elections next Friday, March 25 at 2:00pm exactly. If you would like to try running for president, please be on time. If you would like to have a say in who is the next president, please be on time. If you really don’t care about the matter, please show up for practice as usual.

O.K. so the updates haven’t been weekly for a while.

Yesterday’s practice session was good though sparsely attended. Unfortunately no one was able to go the tournament in Berkeley today. Rumor has it that the Davis tournament will be sometime in April, so at least we have plenty of time to train for that one. In the mean time we will be having our club ranking tournament on March 11th. Be sure to be there to establish your place in the food chain… I mean show off you copious fencing prowess.

Club Day is this Thursday and we need people to man the table. Please reply to this blog or on our Facebook page with your availability. Also, we have new fliers that should be out on campus next week.

This weekend is the Fresno Tournament so wish us luck. There will be no regular meeting next week due to thanksgiving break.

Today some new equipment arrived and we got straight to work making good use of it. Although its been a slow semester, everyone seems more than ready for this weekend’s competition. This tournament we will be sending 4 times as many fencers as last time, a good way knock off the last league tournament of the year.

Weekly Update #49

This week we had another great practice. We apologize that we have not had open bouting time in the last couple meets. Once we have our adviser schedules taken care of we will include the additional hours again.

For now we will be starting the beginning sessions a half hour earlier at 3pm.

Next Friday we will be holding a mini tournament for this semester’s new fencers, so be sure to be there.

Fall 2010 First Official Practice

The Fencing Club will be holding its first official practice this Friday 1-6 at South Gym 214. Beginner lessons start at about 3-330. (If you are new to fencing I recommend you come at this time, though feel free to come in early if you want to watch or have questions)

As club day is the day before this practice there should be a healthy turnout, so be sure to share equipment if you need to borrow any. Also, if this is your first time at the club please ask one of the officers or Brian, the head coach, for a safety waiver to fill out.

Good work Kenny in winning today’s semesterly club tournament! Also of note is this was our first tournament to have fully electric DEs, although there were many technical issues. The full results are:

Officer elections were also held today. Winning another vote of confidence for president, Stephen’s regime has remained in power. In a runoff between Normon Wong and Monica Ng the post of vice president was taken by Monica. The new Treasurer will by Kenny Chang. Simo Silas will retain his role as ICC Representative. With the platform of his successful work as Vice President this past year Johnny Zhang was a shoo-in for Travel Secretary. Finally, Normon Wong now be handling club equipment as Armorer.

I’d like to thank all club members and officers for helping to make this SCCFC’s most successful year to date. We have taken care of our minimum equipment needs to run the club smoothly. We’re starting to see the beginnings of our training program come together. We have a working strip. Recruitment has been taken to a new level. Our regular member base has grown significantly. Teams were fielded for the first time. 7 league medals were taken this year, including 3 of the 4 novice gold positions. In the last 2 competitive years combined we took only 2 medals. We even had donuts at our club tournament.

At today’s meeting we handled a lot of club business planing our semesterly tournament for next Friday, creating new officer positions, as well as starting to straighten up our club constitution.

For training we had open bouting while private lessens were given.

The Semesterly club tournament will be held on Friday May 7th the schedule is as follows:

Unrated Mixed Novice Foil

11:00-Doors Open
12:00-Registration Opens
12:25-Registration Closes
12:30-Tournament Begins

Fencing will consist of 15 Touch DE bouts only with a fence off for 3rd. Seeding will be based on the results of the club ranking tournament held earlier in the year. Unseeded fencers will be placed at the bottom of seeding. Along with the traveling trophy prizes will be awarded to the top 3 competitors.

There will be a $1 entry fee to help cover tournament expenses.

Officer Elections

Next Friday club elections will be held. Along with President, Vice President, and Treasurer, elections will be held for the new positions of ICC Representative, Travel Secretary, and Armorer.

ICC Representative- Go to ICC meetings.

Travel Secretary- Plan and coordinate travel arrangements for away tournaments.

Armorer- Repair and keep track of the club’s equipment.

Another successful tournament for Sac City!

A big congratulations to the novice squad, especially N.Wong and S.Zhang for making the final a SCC only event taking 1st and 2nd respectively. There were also good placements by K.Chang in foil and S.Crane in epee.

Day 2 of the tournament saw good showings of SCC’s first teams to be fielded in competition. Both foil and epee teams were able to put up very good scores having some of the only novices to be entered in the team competitions. M.Ng performed a great feat of endurance and effort competing on both the foil and epee teams simultaneously. Finally, at the end of the day a partnership between SCC’s creative offensive specialist S.Crane and UCB’s bad ass Russian A.Karets yielded a 2nd place finish in doubles epee.

Today, after doing some led footwork, we split into two groups with one fencing and the other working on the wall. Later we had open fencing and discussed some of the details of the upcoming UCD Tournament on April 24. To participate in the tournament be sure to have a current student ID and pre-register. We will be working out any needed rides at next Friday’s practice.

During next Friday’s practice we will be holding a ranking tournament to determine team eligibility. It will consist of a pool round only. We will begin at 12:30. Catch you there!

With spring break over we started back up with another practice. The main lesson today was the use of disengages and countering them with circle parries. After working on this we held pools with everyone fencing each other to 5. Later we held our first tournament training session with some advanced footwork as well as taking time to improve our fleches.

Being the last meeting before spring break the day was very open. We gave some instruction in fundamentals to those that needed it and spent the rest of the time fencing. Besides a fairly spectacular blade break the day was pretty uneventful, though Kenny did get his first chance to fence with all of his brand new equipment.

Today’s practice reviewed the basics of footwork as well as lunges, disengages, and some distance drills. I’m glad to see that more fencers are taking initiative in getting use out of our strip as well as becoming interested in its assembly and cleanup.

The club has just had a little restructuring take place. We have now sorted the club into the two groups of Club and Tournament Training. The Club will operate as it always has. The new division of Tournament Training will provide more advanced and personalized regime for fencers planing to compete at tournaments. If you are interested in joining Tournament Training then speak with Brian, myself or Johnny. In addition it will also give fencers a chance to make the foil, epee, or saber team. Speaking of teams, it looks like we will finally be able to field teams in the upcoming UC Davis Tournament.

The UCD tournament has been moved from its original date of April 3-4 to April 24-25, lets make the extra time count!

Our performance at the UCB tournament was great. Steven Zhang took the gold in N.Foil and the majority of our other fencers finished within the top 8 in their respective weapons.

Today we had a few new people come in, even someone with a bit of their own equipment, always a good sign. After some light footwork, Brian handled getting these new people up to speed while everyone else bouted. The school newspaper also stopped by today. For his multiple gold medal finishes in recent tournaments they have decided to do a feature on Steven Zhang, so be on the lookout for that article in the next copy of The Express.

We took today fairly easy as its the day before a tournament, though we did still get in some basic exercises. Along with these Brian gave us some last minute tweaking to hopefully give us an edge. Remember that you must have proof that you are a current student when registering at the tournament. If you do not have the current ID sticker either get one or bring a printout of your schedule. We will depart school at 6am so be sure to meetup near the library before then. If you did not contact us or were not present at today’s meeting we can not guarantee you a ride.

Next Thursday will be Club Day at school so come check out our booth in the quad!

On Friday we finally filled the treasurer and ICC rep positions. Amanda is now Treasurer and Simo is our new ICC Representative. We worked on various techniques as well as some group footwork during the day. A couple new members came in as well which is always nice pre-club day. Also, Thanks to some frustratingly hard work by Brian, the reels for our piste are a step closer to perfection.

There was a great turnout for this semester’s first official meeting. We saw the return of several old faces and even a new one. The meeting went about as smoothly as one could with lots of instruction and free fencing. With the addition of Johnny’s teaching experience over the break we have more than enough members who can help with training. Also, come check out the pictures we posted in SG214 of tournaments we have been to among other things.

Winter Break Meeting 2009

This Friday on December 18th we will be holding a club meeting. This will be a purely organizational meeting so we will not be fencing. We will however be doing the planning for next semester as well as officer elections. We will be meeting near the motorcycle parking next to the library at 11am and will leave to grab some lunch at 11:30am. Bring your school/work/etc schedule for next semester if you have it to help us plan the best days and times for meetings in spring. This is also a great time to bring up any issues or suggestions you may have regarding the club.

The end of semester tournament was exciting as always. The majority of the bouts in the pool round ending in sudden death definitely raised the intensity. Unfortunately, J.Zhang and S.Zhang had to retire after pool rounds due to previous engagements while both being among the top three seeds. Then a surprise late entry by Semo Silas, who took 3rd at the UCSC tournament, meant it was still anyone’s game. Semo along with C.Magistrado and K.Rodreguez were quickly dispatched in the first round of DEs. The semi-finals saw N.Wong and W.Forkas move on to the final bout with J.Taylor and S.Jimenez left to fight it out for 3rd. The fence off for 3rd was held in a different format than usual. To save time the competitors fencing for 5 continuous minutes without breaks, with the higher scoring fencer taking the final podium spot. During this feat of endurance J.Taylor’s experience payed off against the less seasoned S.Jimenez securing him 3rd. The final between N.Wong and W.Forkas was well matched. Throughout the majority of the bout the touches went evenly back and forth like two tennis ace’s constantly returning to deuce. Late in the bout W.Forkas was able to find a better rhythm and gained a small lead which he was able to hold on to until he reached 15 winning him the tournament. This last tournament has been one of the best shows of fencing that this club has ever seen. It can only get better come Spring Semester.

This was the final official meeting of the semester. Sometime after finals we will be holding a meeting for Spring planning, officer elections, and to celebrate W.Forkas’s victory at today’s tournament. So, keep checking for more information on that meeting.
